What would you do if you were playing in a pick up Celtic band at an Irish pub in downtown Chicago and a biker man yanks you outside, bites you, says "welcome to the family" and then disappears into the Chicago River?

So begins Conor Archer’s journey to Tinker’s Grove, an old Irish immigrant town from the 19th century by the banks of the Wisconsin River.

Once there, Conor realizes he is in a strange town with many mysteries, some really strange people, and many secrets. There are the "Dark Ones", Piasa the river demon, and those from the Otherworld.

Celtic and Native Mythology clash with science in a bargain of destruction only our reluctant hero Conor can stop. A battle with an ancient evil for the future of the world is about to begin.

THE DARK ONES?

WHO ARE THE ROAN AND
THE DARK ONES?

The Roan are the People of the Sea, the selkies, who are seals in the ocean and appear as human on land. They are shapeshifters and are kin to the Tuatha de Danaan, the fae people of old. They are said to have fallen with the rebel angels from heaven but they are not evil.

The ‘Dark Ones’ are the descendants of those Tinkers who coupled with Roan women, shortly before the voyage to America was made to escape the Irish famine of the 1840’s. Recognizable by their webbed hands, they are shapeshifters in their pre-adolescent years who lose their powers as they reach puberty. The people of Tinker’s Grove protect them from the outside world.

E. R. Barr spent his youth wandering around "Conor Country" known better as the ‘Driftless’—the southwest corner of the state of Wisconsin. The Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers and the lands around them dotted with Indian Mounds and filled with stories and legends fueled his imagination. Not till he started traveling world wide did he begin to see connections between Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the lands where he was born. His forebears came from those ancient nations and settled there in Wisconsin. Always wondering why, he kept searching for answers. Priest, college professor, newspaper editor, and a popular speaker on all things Celtic and Tolkien, e. R. Bar makes his home in northwest Illinois. ROAN is his first novel.
